Introduction
This page is a snapshot of old bank and building society branches in and around Leeds. It is mostly taken from the 1972 and 1984 Leeds telephone directories. These cover Leeds, Wakefield and the Heavy Woollen district of Kirklees, around Dewsbury and Batley. It includes all banks that were listed including some that do not offer retail services.
Why banks and buildiing societies? Older locations show traces of the past, such as mining villages or times before slum clearances. The buildings themselves are also quite distinctive. When the branch closes they sometimes leave behind things like old stonework or nightsafes if it's cheaper than removing them. Some buildings are listed so they can't be altered too much.
Most of the locations are where Google Maps has decided the address is. In some areas the address may no longer exist. This particularly affects small neighbourhood branches where entire streets have been demolished. For privacy reasons some locations have been slightly altered such as local agencies of building societies operatng out of private houses. Address information in the telephone directories is not always 100% up to date. Some locations are still listed after the branch has moved, or another bank has taken it over.
